The story on employment insurance in Canada – EI

April 6, 2015 by John Corder

Employment Insurance is just that – insurance that you pay for, every paycheck. When you lose your job through no fault of your own, you should have access to the benefits you paid for! But fewer than 4 in 10 unemployed Canadians qualify for EI benefits. Stephen Harper’s changes to EI are hurting Canadians just when they need Employment Insurance the most. Is that fair?

So the new rules will force you to take a lower paying job an hour and a
half away from where you live?

    Respect to whoever made this.

Correct. A lower paying job up to an hour and half away from where you live
or you could lose your EI benefits.

What happens if I have back and joint problems. I don’t want to spend 3
hours driving(sitting) to and from work after working an 8 or 10 hour
shift. My limit is 45 minutes

Finally a bit of reform here, EI in this Country is a joke and the only
people i hear crying about it is the people who abuse it year after year.
EI is not a subsidy for an employer or employee to work a seasonal job then
get paid to sit on his ass 6 months out of the year. Business’ who can’t
sustain work for their employees should close their doors becuase the
fulltime hard working taxpayers in this Country are sick of paying for
other Canadians. If you cant find work in your town then move.

This system is for the odd people that have 5-30 years with a company then
get laid off and need some time to transition into the work force. How is
it some of these seasonal workers can make 50 thousand dollars in 6 months
working construction in the summer then they get all winter off on a
holiday paid out of my pocket? I heard the one lady in New bruswick say
she’s used EI every year for the last 38 years. What makes you so entitled
to work half the year while the rest of us feed your family?

Unfair changes to the labor inform? shame on you who made this video you
scum bag. Funny how 99% of the people on EI come to find their job back
once their benefits run out. People that use EI year after year suck
hundreds of thousands of dollars out of our pocket while I contribute every
year for nothing. Give you head a shake.

with a silver spoon. give your head a shake loser

Unemployment Insurance (I still call it by that name because that’s really
what it is.) is also an insurance for you, the employed workers, who
contribute to the fund. It lessens the pressure on unemployed to go after
your job for less money. Don’t be lulled into believing that you can’t be
replaced by cheaper workers, desperate for a few dollars to feed their
families. If you want to see what Canada would look like without U.I., just
take a trip to any Central American country.

  10. JFYukon says

    March 4, 2013 at 10:49 am

Your analysis sounds very superficial. Without the benefit of unemployment
insurance, workers who find themselves without a job are driven to accept
any kind of work for any kind of wages. Employers will take advantage of
the situation by lowering wages, or getting rid of higher paid employees.
That means that YOUR job will be on the line. So the insurance premium you
are paying, ushions you against the pressures of the job market.

Little rich punk? why because i graduated from high school? I moved across
the country with a 500$ dollar car and a garbage bag full of clothes for
work. I work two full time jobs and fucking bust my ass to get ahead in
life. I was never given shit i didn’t work for. EI is for people who have
lost their job and need time to transition. Not so seasonal workers can sit
on their ass half the year. Why should i have to work 100 hours a week all
year while they get a holiday?

“Business’ who can’t sustain work for their employees should close their
doors” Ah, so you’re saying that the entire lobster industry (for example)
in Atlantic Canada should completely shut down because the season isn’t all
year long? Allow one of the biggest industries to collapse, allow all those
people to lose those jobs, because they are only working seasonally? Now
there’s an idea that needs its own video [note the sarcasm].

You’ve been enjoying a free ride too long. Why can’t these people do
landscaping, snowremoval, work for the city, pave roads, wash cars, pump
gas. Hard working individuals find a way to continue to feed their family
regardless if there is snow on the ground. What about this statement is
irrational?I’ve been paying into EI for 12 years and the one and only time
i needed to use it they denied me becuase of paperwork. This money doesn’t
come from the bank it comes out of your neighbours pocket.

We don’t live in a city. There are no other jobs besides the
fishing/lobstering industry here other than working in stores and those
jobs are taken. There are no jobs for landscaping, road paving (done by the
department of highways), and very few service stations here, all with
employees already. As for snow removal, what snow? We don’t get enough here
and there are companies that do that. Live here first…then comment.

Go fuck yourself idiot. Nobody said you had to work 100 hours a week. Some
of us seasonal workers depend on EI for when work slows to a near hault.
And we PAY into EI ourselves every cheque so it’s our money moron. Don’t
tell people what they can do with THEIR money you insufferable douche-bag!

dealing with EI is absolutely horrible! they never keep you in the loop,
they take FOREVER to approve your claim, and they only deal in letters and
not a phone call making it even more horrible.

no..what people fail to realize is that ei exists so people can continue to
make minimum payments on credit to the banks using public money when they
are not working..but you can feel good about what you have accomplished in
your life so far without ever having to depend on ei..congrats.. but ask
yourself ..are you bitter because some of your high school friends are
still living in your home town where as you are unhappy with your present
    situation in alberta?

I don’t work winters anymore due to Back and Joint problems, so I usually
collect EI in the winter. Also, WTF, let the younger guys that have
    Mortgage payments work.
