In late 2013, we set out to document the lives of individuals with a disability and an organization working to empower their lives through training and employment. What we found and learned was one of great beauty: people with a disability have abilities, and those abilities are a powerful asset to the marketplace and to our society, in West Virginia and beyond. Through employment, their lives have been changed, and now their story is a part of our own.
WVARF (West Virginia Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, Inc.) is West Virginia’s Central Non-Profit Agency (CNA), established through a piece of legislation passed in 1984 for creation of a State Use Program. The spirit of the State Use legislation is to create economic independence and self-reliance of West Virginians with disabilities. WVARF works closely with Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs) throughout the state, connecting individuals with a disability to jobs and training opportunities provided through the CRPs.

From Charleston, Fairmont, Morgantown, and Weirton; to Parkersburg, Maben, Mullens, Bridgeport, Frametown, and more. WVARF and the CRPs based in these communities are empowering the lives of individuals with disabilities, disregarding the “dis” and focusing on the invaluably hard-working, dedicated, committed individuals with a abilities who have so much to offer a competitive work environment, the state of West Virginia, and the nation.
We look forward to the continued growth of WVARF and it’s partnering Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs), impacting the lives of individuals with a disability who so greatly need and deserve these opportunities for a better, more improved quality of life.
